Program Description

Students will lay out a “spoked” base using rattan flat stakes. A continuous weave will be used to start this basket. The stakes are split and the weave will continue up the sides of the basket with a 2/2 twill weaving pattern. Shaping techniques will be taught as the sides are woven. Baskets will be finished with rim fitting, scarfing and a decorative “braided” lash.

Finished basket measures about 4” high by 10” wide, a nice size to serve your favorite muffins.


About our Instructor

Wendy Jensen is an award-winning professional basket maker living in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. She exhibits her work at juried craft shows and galleries nationally, and has taught basket making at many conferences, craft schools, museums and private facilities as well as her own studio for over 25 years. Her work was selected for publication in 500 Baskets: A Celebration of the Basketmaker’s Art by Lark Books. Although a majority of her work is made with rattan/reed, she has also been cultivating and weaving with basket willow for over 20 years.
