David A. Kaynor: Living Music and Dance
During his 45 year career as a musician and dance caller, David Kaynor worked tirelessly and with considerable success to carry on the great traditions of New England fiddling and contra dance. This book superbly documents that career. It starts with a fascinating autobiographical essay in which David recounts his introduction to music, his growth as a musician, and his unceasing efforts to build a community of dancers and musicians in Western Massachusetts and beyond. The success of that effort is made evident by loving tributes written by members of his community. The book also contains transcriptions of more than 70 original tunes (some with wonderful harmonies) and a guide written years ago for aspiring contra dance callers. It is beautifully illustrated by a variety of David’s dance posters and drawings. Spread throughout are dozens of interesting insights into the many ways in which music and dance can enrich the lives of those who engage in them.
