These beautiful and luxurious Wool Blankets are 100% New England made!
Description
Bartlettyarn Blankets
Woven by Eva Gaultney of Woven Comfort on a Glimåkra fly shuttle loom, these Bartlettyarn Blankets are a reproduction of one of Becky’s many blanket designs from her production years in the 1980s and early 90s. It’s a delight to pass skills on to our teacher apprentice.
Blankets are 72″ x 44″. Please note that size may vary slightly due to the handmade nature of the items. The cost of shipping via USPS is included in price; any other forms of shipping will include additional charge that will be shared with you after the blanket has been shipped.
We are also considering offering these blankets in kit form, so you can weave your own. Let us know if you are interested, and we will be sure to keep you updated on our progress.
Bartlettyarns
The wool yarn used in these blankets is manufactured at Bartlettyarns in Harmony Maine, which dates back to 1821. Ozias Bartlett started a carding mill along the banks of Higgins Stream. Operating until the 1920’s, the original building burned and a new building was constructed with all modern conveniences, such as electricity! The spinning mule operates daily and is the last remaining within the United States. A Johnson and Wales, circa 1940’s spins 240 bobbins at a time, replicating the motion of hand spinning. The fine yarns produced are known worldwide for the softer twist and airy loftiness.
A Message from Becky
“After attending my 15 week-long intensive weaving course in the Fall of 2019, Eva and Megan were invited back to start up blanket production. I am thrilled to once again offer blankets for sale after a 25 year hiatus. Friends and acquaintances still inquire from time to time if they can purchase a blanket, and now I can say “YES”!! These 2 young women have worked hard and have become skilled weavers, and their work is stunning.”
A Message from Eva and Megan
“Eva and I both came to the Väv Immersion program with different backgrounds. Eva came to the Väv Immersion program after working as an Environmental Educator. She initially learned and fell in love with weaving at Berea College in Kentucky. She had heard about Becky’s Swedish weaving school long ago and came with a desire to grow her existing skills. I had no prior weaving experience before the course but have an artistic vein in my family and was looking for a meaningful retreat following my year of volunteer work in France. We both fell in love with the beautiful area that is western Massachusetts and thoroughly enjoyed the extended weaving education that we received from Becky. When Becky approached us towards the end of the program about possibly weaving wool blankets for production both of our gut reactions were to accept this unique opportunity. We are excited to introduce these initial blankets to you and look forward to launching a website with more of our weavings in the future. Our desire is that these handmade blankets would bring warmth, comfort and some artistic beauty to your home.”
A small percentage of this purchase will be donated to the continuation of programming that helps to preserve traditional crafts and skills, such as the Väv Immersion program.
