In light of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, Fabric of Life has made the difficult decision to cancel all in-person events for the remainder of 2020. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to being together with you all again very soon, virtually for now, hopefully in person in the near future.
Instructor: Kimberlee Rohloff
Kimberlee Rohloff has been involved in the practice of hand spinning for over thirty years. She brings the same passion, focus and love of learning which she utilized while earning a Masters of Music degree in classical guitar to her study of the fiber arts and hand spinning. As a hand spinner, she especially enjoys taking raw fleece through to a finished yarn, including fiber processing and dyeing. She has taken workshops and classes with Judith Mackenzie, Deb Menz, Sara Lamb, Tom Knisely, Joan Ruane, Oliver Henry and many others. Her handspun yarns have won awards at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival.
Program Description
The class will take students through all the steps necessary to turn a sheep’s fleece into usable yarn from washing, processing to spinning. The structure and timing of this class allows for time to practice and to ask questions about the entire process. All materials are provided but a student can bring there own wheel if they have one. On the first day of class, students will learn the mechanics of the spinning wheel, a variety of drafting techniques, the proper use of hand carding and wool combing, and the proper method of spinning a variety of sheep breeds. On the second day, students will learn several plying techniques, proper finishing of their handspun yarn, and how to wash a raw fleece.
